Oak Bed Frame Slat Solutions

Choosing the right bed base for your solid oak bedframe

At The Oak Bed Workshop, we do not believe one standard bed base is right for every customer.

Every sleeper is different. Some people prefer a firmer, flatter feel underneath their mattress.
Others prefer a more flexible support system that responds to the body.

That is why our solid oak bed frames can be supplied with a choice of bed slat and bed base
solutions. The main decision is whether you prefer firm support or sprung support.

Firm or Sprung Support?

Firm support: Flatter, firmer and more stable. Customers who prefer a solid, supportive feel
Sprung support: Flexible, responsive and cushioned. Customers who prefer more movement and comfort beneath the mattress

Our recommendation

For most customers, we recommend our Second-Generation sprung slatted bed base. It offers close slat spacing, flexible support and a good balance of comfort, specification and value.

If your budget allows, we recommend upgrading to our Fifth-Generation sprung slatted bed base. This is our premium sprung support option, with soft and firm technology built into each bed slat holder and 15 independent support zones per sleeper.

Firm support solutions

Firm support is best if you prefer your mattress to feel flatter and more stable.

A firm base does not flex like a sprung bed base. This gives the mattress a more solid foundation and can suit customers who prefer a firmer sleeping surface.

The Oak Bed Workshop

Flat pine slatted bed base

Our flat pine slatted bed base is a simple, strong and practical support option.

It is better than a basic webbed slat set because it is made as a proper drop-in bed base for our oak bed frames. The slats are spaced with an approximate gap of 40mm–50mm, giving good firm support for the mattress.

Support feel: Firm

Support type: Flat, non-sprung support

Slat material: Solid pine

Typical slat gap: Approximately 40mm–50mm

Best for: Customers who prefer a firmer mattress feel

Sprung Support Solutions

Sprung support is best if you prefer a softer, more flexible feel underneath your mattress.

Sprung bed slats are curved beech slats that flex slightly under the mattress. This can make the bed feel more responsive and cushioned compared with a firm flat slat base.

We offer several sprung slat systems, depending on the specification, slat gap and comfort level required.

The Oak Bed Workshop

Standard Slatted Bed Base

Standard sprung slats use 63mm wide beech slats with an approximate gap of 65mm.

This is a basic sprung support option, but the gap between the slats is larger than our more advanced systems.

Support feel: Flexible sprung support

Slat width: 63mm

Approx. slats per sleeper: 15, depending on bed length

Approx. slat gap: 65mm

The Oak Bed Workshop

First-Generation Slatted Bed Base

This gives closer support than standard sprung slats and can be a good step up from a basic system.

Support feel: Flexible sprung support with closer spacing

slats.

For many customers, this is the best balance of comfort, specification and value.

Depending on the bed size and number of sleepers, the adjustable base can be supplied as one full-width bed base or as two individual bases. A single full-width base is ideal for one sleeper. For larger beds or two-sleeper arrangements, two
individual bases allow each side of the bed to be controlled independently.

Pod disc support system

The pod disc system is a more advanced responsive support option.

Instead of traditional wooden slats, the mattress is supported by individual comfort pods, also known as sprung trays or disc pods. These pods respond across different
areas of the body and can help fine-tune the support underneath the mattress.

Support feel: Responsive support

Support type: Pod disc support system

Alternative names: Comfort sleep pods, sprung trays, disc pods

Best for: Customers wanting a more advanced comfort support system
